Odyssey - Gary and Diane Schaffel's new Tartan 4000

Many of us had the pleasure of meeting Gary and Diane Schaffel at our Dana Point BBQ in May.  At the time they were researching the purchase of a brand new Tartan, either the 4000 or the 4100.  Previously, many of us corresponded with them sharing our thoughts and opinions on features, options and even color of docklines (just kidding)!

Gary and Diane have completed the purchase of a new Tartan 4000 and will take delivery by the end of the year.

I signed all the paper work last night, so we are on our way.  Dave Inglis, the local Tartan rep, has been great to work with.
The fact that Tartan has a “pay as we build” process creates a minor financing problem if you want to get a conventional loan since it is not like a completed boat, where the lender can see that the boat and engine really exist.  Steve Malbasa at Tartan helped get us through that process, but going this route does require a large initial down payment.  Delivery is estimated for mid-December.

The boat will have a blue hull, teak deck, sole, and coaming, power winches, bow thruster, maple interior, AIS, spinnaker pole and set-up,  and microwave oven.  Still undecided are radar, dodger, fabric covers, and miscellaneous finishes.  Suggestions on radar and the best location for it are appreciated.

Next step is to start picking colors and set up a time schedule.  I plan on visiting the factory several times during the build and also hire a marine surveyor to visit, particularly when they mate the hull and deck

To celebrate, Gary and Diane met Bill Solberg at California Yacht Club on Saturday, June 27.

It will be interesting to follow the factory build process to watch Odyssey become a reality.
