April 19, 2009 Dinner theme, 'Catalina Bound!'

We are looking forward to an active year, and we will be eager to see you at our upcoming events. Please take note of our next land-based dinner meeting. Mark your calendars!

A TOSCA Evening at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, Corona del Mar, Sunday April 19, 5:00 P.M.

Join your TOSCA mates for an evening at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club (see map) on Sunday, April 19. We will have a no-host cocktail period from 5 pm to 6 pm, followed by the chef's famous fish tacos and all the trimmings. The club has a very nice private room for us, and this will be a great opportunity to get together with fellow TOSCANS and talk about our theme for the year, 'Catalina Bound'. Our guest speaker is a well-known sailor, rigger, and outfitter from Southern California, Dave Robertson. Dave will address the key issues that all crew must consider when venturing out to Catalina, including safety, sailing, and mooring. Dave will focus on local waters knowledge. He will add remarks on the characteristics of a well-found cruising sailboat. This program will be helpful for those who haven't been to Catalina before but will also be of interest to experienced cruisers.

The cost is $30 per person. To reserve, please complete the form and send a check to TOSCA, c/o Doug Mills, 5061 Berean Lane, Irvine, Ca. 92603. Since we have to inform the club how many will be present, we will need to hear from you no later than Sunday, April 12.

TOSCA 2009 Dues now due!

As noted in the last newsletter, we need your 2009 dues to keep bringing you TOSCA events. If you have not already done so, please send a check to TOSCA, in care of Doug Mills at the address given above. The dues are $30 per year, and as we mentioned earlier your membership includes a 10% discount on any parts you order from the Tartan factory. If you are paid up, let Art Avererill know you are a member of TOSCA to get the discount. We would appreciate it if you would include your dues in the reservation check for our April 19 event.

TOSCA Web Site

Visit the TOSCA Web site ( There you will find a list of TOSCA members with contact information. So check out the site! The site will have newsletters, information on our upcoming events, and other matters of interest. We are still in the early stages of developing the site, there will be more to come and suggestions are always welcome. We would very much like to acquire photos of the various TOSCA boats, and post them on the site. You will see that a few of us have boat photos which can be accessed through the member list. If you have a nice shot of your boat, please forward same to Keith Wilson at

'Catalina Bound!'

The date of the third annual TOSCA Rendezvous will be June 12-14, 2009. As before, we will go to Two Harbors at Catalina Island, with plans for a Friday arrival and Sunday departure. The Isthmus facilities are now better than ever before. We will have an opening night barbecue, a Saturday morning program, our dinghy raft up in midday Saturday, and a dinner in the restaurant on Saturday evening. We have an exciting development. Bill Solberg has been in contact with an active Tartan owner in Northern California, who plans to bring her boat down and join us. We hope that she can persuade some of her friends to come as well. This will be a marvelous addition to our event, and it may be the beginning of links between TOSCA and the many Tartans in the Bay Area.

Mark your calendars for the big cruise weekend, and we will all be eager to see you there. More details will be forthcoming as the date approaches.
