TOSCA Long Beach Cruise

15 TOSCAns came out for our day sail in Long Beach and it was absolutely fantastic!  Sanguine, skippered by Keith & Mary Fullenwider, Imagine Too, skippered by Larry & Robin Goshorn, and Intuition, skippered by Don & Laura McLennan, hosted Caroline & Dave Stege, Frank & Patty Conner, Marko Princevac & Sang Mi Lee, Nico Jonville, and Fred & Pascale Hayem.  The weather and sea conditions couldn’t have been any better, with sunny skies and  about 16-18 knots of wind.  After raising our sails, we raced all the way from the Queen Mary out to the breakwater, then turned west and raced down the inside channel past oil tankers all the way to San Pedro.
We were quite competitive (all three boats had experienced racers on board), but it was all in good fun, so there was French champagne, smoked salmon, home baked Quiche Lorraine, fruit, wine, margaritas, cake and other delectable nibbles along the way.  We then “raced” in the light winds past the USS Iowa up the Cerritos Channel under the Vincent Thomas Bridge.  As we approached the Henry Ford and Commodore Heim Bridges, we furled our jibs, called the bridge tenders for a lift and, after a very long train finished crossing, floated under the bridges raised just for us!  We then motored down to the Gerald Desmond Bridge, back to the main channel.  We again let the jibs out to play and the racing began anew.  Intuition surprised her competitors when she brought out her secret weapon (asymmetric spinnaker) and flew under 16-18 knots of wind, at a speed of 7.8 knots, all the way back toward the marina at Shoreline.  The sail was about 5 hours long, dock to dock, and a good time was had by all.  After returning to the dock, the fun continued when we all met up at the Shoreline Yacht Club, thanks to Keith & Mary’s excellent connections, and enjoyed a rooftop patio view of the marina, food & drinks, and great friendship.  The day was a blast!!!!!!!

In fact, we had so much fun that we decided not to wait till the Rendezvous to get together again.    Larry and Robin Goshorn have graciously offered their home for a afternoon BBQ on May 17 at 3:00.  People should bring something to barbeque for themselves, plus a side dish to share.  Pascale & Fred Hayem will be bringing a really yummy dessert from an amazing French bakery in Pacific Beach, by special request.  E-mails will be coming out with more details as the date approached but please mark your calendars now!
